The direction that was built

A sheet torn out of Ruth's watercolour block — cut to that soft freehand deckle, with a band of ocean blue painted along the cut and stopping where the paper stops, and every moment of the three days given its own small painted object.

The anchorstoryAesthetic: about two hundred small watercolours of the same stretch of sea at Sennen, painted over forty summers, torn out of a cold-press block and never signed — plus specialRequests, which opens by calling that torn edge "the single thing I would spend the money on".

The heartThey met in the water without speaking and have swum together every week since. The suite is made of water and the things in it, so the thing that brought them together is the thing the guests are holding.

The arcThe Save the Date is one wave and four lines. The invitation adds the wreath with its clearing. The events card spends the whole vocabulary at once — six objects, three days — and is the peak. Everything after it steps back down the decoration ladder to a single object on a place card, so the suite opens quietly, states itself, and recedes to let the day happen.

Why this coupleNo other couple's suite could be cut to this die: the edge is one grandmother's habit of tearing sheets out of a block, the blue is the single colour that her paintings and the other family's porcelain turn out to share, and the object-per-moment mechanism exists because ninety-six people are flying to a five-venue cliff-top resort and two of their friends already got lost twice on the first evening.

107 type sizes are emitted across the nine pieces and asserted against these floors at build time by build-whitlockvarma-suite.py; the smallest shipped size is 8pt. The A2 welcome sign runs a separate 2.5x ramp, documented at its builder.

A piece the suite never anticipated takes the die at its own trim (pitch = 26mm × min(w,h)/127), the band, and ONE object not already used as another piece's primary. If the vocabulary is exhausted, paint a new object with the recipe in imagery.generation_recipe — never reuse a primary.

Notes	No reverse type anywhere in the suite, so registration tolerance is not critical. The painted band straddles the die line by design; it is cut, not offset. Uncoated stock will soften the wash edges further, which is the intent.

What this suite refuses

a boxed timetable, a grid of ruled rows, or grey hairlineswhatToAvoid, verbatim: 'nothing that could be mistaken for a schedule of talks'. It is also the device Direction A could not avoid, which is why A lost.
sunsets, hammocks, paper umbrellas, palm-at-dusk silhouetteswhatToAvoid bans the beach-brochure register by name. Enforced at the generator: see the no-palm-trees note in scripts/gen-whitlockvarma-motifs.mjs.

Every painted object, and where it is used

Visual review of a cream-ground contact sheet; two rounds rejected for a fourth colour, one for a banned object (a paper cocktail umbrella). Every object was painted for this suite with one formula so the nine pieces read as one hand, and no two pieces lead with the same one — asserted at build time, not by eye.
