The choice
Both worlds come out of the same object — the Bonheur's register. They disagree about one thing only: whether your names should be the loudest thing in the envelope, or absent from it almost entirely.
You want the evening to open on a surface rather than an announcement — something a guest turns over in their hands before they read it, a Save the Date that does not say your names at all, and a suite where no two pieces carry the same pattern.
You want the two of you to be the loudest thing in the envelope: the names at full size, written into one another the way he wrote his under hers, with the hotel and the hour standing politely at the edges and waiting.
| A · The Endleaf | B · The Second Name | |
|---|---|---|
| What the guest is handed | A sheet of marbled paper with the details in the clear water | Two names written across a bare cream card |
| Where the names go | Small and subordinate to the pattern; on the Save the Date, absent entirely | The names are the card, at full height, overlapping between lines |
| Format & stock | Uncoated cotton rag, printed edge to edge with no margin, deckled on three edges | Hard-sized smooth cotton rag, engraved, with generous bare cream around the type |
| Where the accent lands | One loaded edge per piece — a deckle, a sewing, a cut | The stroke itself; a second oxblood ink only where a piece has two hands on it |
| Imagery | The pattern is the only image, and it never repeats across pieces | No imagery at all, on any piece — the page belongs to the handwriting |
| The repeatable mark | E and W cut out of the combing so the bare sheet shows through | E and W written as one stroke, the W's entry crossing the E's exit |
| The risk it carries | A guest looking for when and where has to find it inside a pattern; it asks for patience | Nine pieces of large script would be a shout, so most of the suite has to stay in the quiet roman and let the invitation carry it |
Direction B — The Second Name — is the world that was built. Every piece in the suite descends from it; The Endleaf was not carried forward.
