Noa Shapiro

Noa’s Torah portion is Lech Lecha — the command to set out — and she is a thirteen-year-old painter on sketchbook number forty-one. Two riso-spirited worlds answer that.

Where it started

Noa’s Torah portion is Lech Lecha — the command to set out — and she is a thirteen-year-old painter on sketchbook number forty-one. Two riso-spirited worlds answer that.

Sketchbook forty-one is already open; the invitation is a page from forty-two.

World A

Lech Lecha

Noa draws maps of imaginary cities, and her portion commands her to set out. This direction hands her the pen: the suite is cartography in three riso inks — apricot districts, lilac parks, cream roads, one dotted indigo journey line wandering from her name to the date to the place. The invitation folds like a map because it is one. Nothing is cute; everything is drawn with the confident flatness of a printed poster.

What this world had still to settle
  • Whether a map that folds is a map or an invitation. It folds like one because it is one — and an invitation that has to be unfolded before it can be read is asking something of every guest.
  • Whether the imaginary cities are Noa's or ours. She draws them; the suite hands her the pen. Whether she draws the printed artwork or we draw in her manner had not been agreed, and it is the difference between her suite and a suite about her.
  • Whether the dotted journey line survives nine pieces. Wandering from name to date to place is the device. On a place card there are only two points and no journey.
  • Whether lilac earns a place. It is declared in the palette and does not appear in the artwork — which makes it either a third ink nobody is printing or an accent still waiting for its job.
World B

The Paper Sky

Noa named her tables after constellations before any designer arrived — the sky was already her seating plan. This direction charts the real late-October night over the city in three riso inks: indigo sky, apricot stars, lilac atmosphere, the skyline as a cream silhouette holding it up. Her name becomes a drawn constellation, and her comet doodle crosses the suite exactly once, small, where only she will find it.

What this world had still to settle
  • Whether the real late-October sky is legible as a sky. Charted accurately in three flat inks it is also a scatter of dots, and accuracy is the thing nobody can see.
  • Whether one comet is findable. Small, once across the whole suite, where only she will find it — which is charming if she finds it and pointless if she does not.
  • Whether a name drawn as a constellation stays a name. It is the best idea here and the one most likely to need a caption, which would undo it.
  • Whether Hebrew sits comfortably on a dark ground. The board bans distorting it or using it as decoration; reversing true RTL type out of indigo at small sizes is where those rules get tested.
The decision, as they saw it

The Paper Sky

The sky had already decided. Eleven pieces were built from The Paper Sky — and Lech Lecha stayed in the suite anyway, printed on the order of service.

At invitation stage the drawn sky was set aside: nothing is drawn anywhere in the eleven pieces. Her name carries them in two alphabets, נועה beside NOA, and the comet survives where Noa put it in the first place — table ten.
